projects Fire Station

The refurbishment of the Fire Station vehicle bays at the Town Arsenal for The States of Guernsey Property Services Department posed a number of challenges. Firstly the building is listed so a sympathetic approach was required to retain the feel of the existing building yet still provide for a modern fire and rescue service. The health and safety of the fire fighters was key in making sure that the installation of a new non slip safety floor met with strict health and safety at work standards. However in consultation with the Environment Department a 1 metre (check) strip of the original granite floor sets were reinstated. The effect from outside the building especially when the large vehicle bay doors are open gives the effect that the granite sets are still very much in evidence. As well as the new floor porta cabins were replaced with new purpose built offices and communications room. The former damp and dilapidated gym was treated for damp ingress and totally refurbished. New internal drainage was installed throughout and a visitor/disabled WC and shower facility was created. New double glazed replacement windows were installed. The projects final completion certificate was issued in January 2010.
